The Exact Formula I Used to Recover From Health Anxiety

Welcome, my peaceful warriors. A few days ago, I was looking through my social media platforms and I asked myself: Why don't I give my viewers the exact formula that I used to recover from health anxiety? That is exactly what we are going to do today. I am going to reveal step-by-step what I did to get to the other side. I know exactly where you are right now, and I know exactly what you are going through. There was a time in my life when my health anxiety was at the forefront of everything I did. It didn't matter where I was or who I was with; my focus and energy were constantly turned inward toward my body, desperately trying to protect myself from potential danger.

Before we get to the real shift that changed my life, I need to share what didn’t work, because I bet you are stuck in these exact same patterns right now:

  • Trying to think my way out: I tried to outsmart anxiety by finding all the root causes, catching every thought, and trying to use willpower to convince my body I was fine.
  • Searching for quick fixes: I lived with constant FOMO (fear of missing out), bombarding myself from morning till night with podcasts and videos, convinced that the "one magic line" or right technique was just an arm's length away.
  • Watching my symptoms constantly: Always keeping a close eye on my body "just in case."
  • Distracting myself: I dove deep into hard work, physical exercise, and constant stimulation just to avoid looking at what was really taking place beneath the anxiety. I was running away from something, not moving toward something. (That’s a "more than anxiety" moment right there!)

What did all of this do? It made me identify completely as an anxious person. I would wake up in the morning and immediately zip up my "anxious suit," viewing my entire world through the heavy, pessimistic lens of anxiety.

The Real Shift

real shiftThe real turning point came when I realized that 95% of what I was doing to "fix" my anxiety was actually coming from my inner protector, the part of me stuck in pure survival mode.

Here is the exact formula I used to step out of survival mode and finally heal:

Step 1: I Looked at Anxiety from My Nervous System’s Perspective

When I stepped back and looked at my nervous system, one word kept showing up: Overwhelm. I was overwhelming my system behaviorally (staying up late, staring at blue light, exhausting my adrenals with hard workouts) and mentally (using up all my brain juice trying to figure everything out). I was always chasing excitement and never felt grounded. To heal, I had to recognize the things keeping my nervous system pushed way beyond its threshold into fight-or-flight.

Step 2: I Built "Safety Signals" and "Real Rest" Into My Life

I didn't use safety signals as a temporary trick; I made them a new way of living.

  • Mental Safety Signals: I used a gentle word like "loosen" in rhythm with my breath, without strictly counting seconds or forcing it.
  • Emotional Safety Signals: I practiced emotional neutrality. To a nervous system stuck in survival mode, emotional neutrality feels incredibly boring, like watching paint dry. But that boring neutrality is exactly what your system needs to regulate.
  • Physical Safety Signals: I slowed down the speed of everything. I stopped speed-walking to the bathroom and rushing through my showers. I consciously slowed my physical pace to signal safety.

Step 3: I Responded to Symptoms with Patience and Understanding

If you react to your symptoms with urgency and fear, your brain strengthens the neural pathways that scream "danger!" Instead, I started practicing my response to symptoms like I was practicing a new sport, a new dance, or painting on a canvas. I approached them with gentleness and tapped into my intuitive, playful side rather than my panicked inner protector.

Step 4: I Stayed Consistent and Allowed Time to Work

Your inner protector will always say, "It's not working, change it!" But your higher, true self says, "Stay on the path. Keep showing the body safety through deep rest, and let it do the rest." I made this formula a lifestyle and completely stopped checking the results or giving my healing a strict timeline. Eventually, I became completely disinterested in the intrusive thoughts and bodily symptoms.

Step 5: I Stopped Identifying as an "Anxious Person"

This was huge. I completely stopped identifying with the old version of me that was defined by anxiety. In many ancient traditions, a person steps into a new name when they heal. For me, I shifted from "Dennis" to "Aki." Dennis was heavy, pessimistic, and had no trust in the body to heal. Aki is lighter, optimistic, and deeply trusts his body.

If you continue to do things the way you’ve always done them, coming from that inner protector, you will stay stuck. It’s time to approach your healing from a place of gentleness.

Remember, you are more than anxiety. Keep going. I love you so much.
